About Us

Connie Smith, Founder/Director

Our shelter has been a dream come true for our founder Connie Smith. As a former humane agent, she saw the need for a rescue for unwanted and stray dogs and cats.

In January 2011, our home for rescued pets was founded, and in just a few short years, outgrew the horse barn where it was started. In October 2015, we built a new facility at our location. Connie’s dream of an open rescue where the dogs could be out to play and socialize was now a reality.

In our first month at our new location, 18 adoptions were processed. Fast forward to 2019, 1045 dogs and cats found their forever homes thanks to Connie Smith and her dream.

Dog Adoption Rescue in Urbana, Ohio

Barely Used Pets is a non-profit dog and cat rescue in Urbana, Ohio. We provide an alternative for the unwanted, abandoned, stray and relinquished animals of our county as well as surrounding counties.

Every dog and cat that enters our organization is spayed or neutered, up-to-date on vaccines, socialized, and given the love and care they so deserve until they find their forever homes.

Our Routine for the Animals

This environment aids in the transition from shelter to home when the dog(s) are adopted. Each dog is kenneled at night with cots, dog beds, and toys.

When a potential adopter visits, they can see how each dog interacts with other dogs, both larger and smaller, as well as how a dog responds to meeting new people. We have also recently added a cat area to our shelter. Visit our facility to see for yourself the difference it makes.
